FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What age can someone start martial arts training?

While martial arts training can start at any age, many of our programs have classes designed for children as young as 5 years old. We also have classes for teens and adults, ensuring there's a suitable program for everyone, regardless of age.

Do I need any prior experience to join a class?

No prior experience is necessary! We offer beginner friendly classes for those new to martial arts. As you progress, you can transition to more advanced classes, ensuring a steady and comprehensive learning experience.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for easy movement, please avoid zippers or loose pockets. We do have loaner uniforms available for your first class if required. As you continue your training, we recommend purchasing a uniform (often called a gi), which can be bought directly from our studio or a specialized retailer.

What should I bring to my first class?

No need to bring anything to your first class except yourself. We have loaner uniforms, gloves, and equipment available for your first class so just come in and we'll help get you started.

How often should I attend classes to see progress?

We recommend attending classes twice a week, at minimum, for consistent progress. However, the frequency can vary based on individual goals, schedules, and the specific martial art discipline.

How long will it take me to get my first belt?

While everyone's journey and progress are unique, the fundamental skills required to receive a blue belt at our academy are as follows:

1. Becoming a safe training partner. Gaining the ability to train safely with anyone in the room, despite their gender, age, size, or rank.

2.Distance Management: This involves demonstrating the ability to effectively control the space between us and our opponent.

2. Standing Yourself Up: You should be able to get back to a standing position safely and efficiently.

3. Pinning Your Opponent Down: This requires the ability to control and hold your opponent on the ground.

This takes approximately two years.

Is sparring mandatory?

Sparring is an integral part of many martial arts but is not mandatory for beginners. Safety is our top priority, and you will be placed with a safe and more experienced partner once you are ready to participate in live sparring rounds under close supervision and helpful guidance.

Is an appointment required?

An appointment is not required, walk-ins are welcome! Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the class to have enough time to complete the initial paperwork and get ready for class.

Do you allow visitors?

Yes! We welcome and encourage visitors to join us. We have affordable drop-in rates so visitors can pay by session, or we have 10-visit passes available for those staying for more than one class. We do ask that you arrive 10 minutes prior to your first class to complete the necessary forms and prepare for class. Open Mat sessions are also open to visitors, but we do have a two stripe minimum requirement to participate.

Testimonials

I attended open mat here one weekend. Everyone was very hospitable, helpful and ready to help you get better. Professor Clay is one of the best. Very humble, knowledgeable and ready to teach. Although he is an experienced black belt, he sparred with me and let me try new things while also showing me where I was making mistakes. I highly recommend this academy.

The experience here at VVBJJ is exceptional. They have built a world class facility, brought in connected and knowledgable instructors, and deliver a wide variety of classes to keep everyone engaged and progressing in their training. My son has been in the kids class for ~ 30 days and the instruction is exceptional. Wish I could give more than 5 stars as their entire team deserves it.

Awesome academy!

While traveling across country I dropped in and trained for a week at Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy. I had the privilege of training with BJJ black belt and Pro MMA fighter Clay Wimer... Awesome coach and super nice guy! I highly recommend this academy to anyone wanting to train BJJ.

On a side note they also train Muay Thai and strength conditioning. A pleasant friendly atmosphere! All the best!
